Grupo Bimbo's Open Door Initiative: A Gateway to Innovation in the Food Industry



Grupo Bimbo, the world's largest baking company, has announced the second edition of its Bimbo Open Door program. This initiative aims to foster innovation and collaboration within the food industry, specifically focusing on startups and scaleups in the cookie and energy bar sector. The program is open for registration from September 20 to October 6, 2023.


Eligibility Criteria


To qualify for the Bimbo Open Door program, entrepreneurs must meet specific criteria:


- Validated products, operations, or an expansion plan in the Americas or Europe.

- Annual sales exceeding $250,000.

- Availability to participate in a 12-week program in Mexico.


Sustainability and Innovation


The program places a strong emphasis on sustainability. Startups and scaleups that align with Grupo Bimbo's sustainability strategy will be given priority. The evaluation process will focus on:


- Simple recipes

- Nutritional diversity

- Plant-based ingredients

- Environmentally-friendly business models


Verticals for Participation


Entrepreneurs can apply in one of three verticals:


1. Cookies and/or Bars for Children: Nutritious and delicious options using innovative ingredients and technologies.

2. Innovative Snacks: Cookies and/or bars with natural or unconventional ingredients that support flavor preservation.

3. Artisanal Products: Cookies and/or bars that use new culinary techniques to preserve a "homemade" essence.


Program Highlights


Selected participants will receive:


- Mentoring from Grupo Bimbo executive managers.

- Access to Grupo Bimbo’s global infrastructure.

- Opportunity to develop a pilot project proposal.


The program will culminate in a "Demo Day," where proposals will be analyzed by a forum of bakery executives. Finalists will advance to the "Behind the Door" stage for future collaboration opportunities.


Partnerships and Previous Success


Bimbo Open Door is powered by Bimbo Ventures, in partnership with Blue Box, Latin America's largest network of incubators, accelerators, and corporate investment funds. The first edition of the program saw participation from over 20 countries, receiving more than 250 requests from startups and scaleups.
